Train Like a Banker!
Sean Donnelly

Sean is a great example of a real person who uses fitness to find balance in life. Sean says, "Physical activity has always been very important to me. I was a high-school athlete - I played soccer, football, baseball, you name it. I worked as a sports official and ran the intramural sports department to put myself through college."

Playing sports kept Sean physically fit until several years ago when he tore his ACL in his right knee. After surgery, he returned to his routine and actually tore the same ACL again! Sean knew he had to change his approach to fitness and be respectful of his injuries. Sean started introducing physical activity back into his schedule with yoga at first, then progressed to the gym.

"Last year, I signed up for Iron Camp because I had set a goal for myself to be in great shape when I turned 40. Well, Iron Camp helped me meet my goal and I feel I am in better shape now than ever before!"
Goal-setting is a key to Sean's success in staying in shape and also with his success in other areas of his life. "Its good to set long-term goals and short-term goals", Sean says. "Short-term goals keep you motivated from day-to-day and week-to-week. You can have the satisafaction of meeting a goal and then being able to say, OK, what's next? I always keep my long-term fitness goals in mind - then for me, it is not just a workout, it is part of a longer-term and bigger thing."

Sean's excitement is contagious and his motivation is inspiring. He works out at the gym almost every day after work. "For me, its not even a decision what to do after work, because I already have made the larger decision. Everyone pretty much makes a choice as they get older - and I make the choice every day to take care of myself.

"When I slack off, it helps to remind myself of how much better I feel by - I am definitely motivated by past results and try to focus on the positive impact that I know my workout will have on all areas of my life."

Remember, you can set short-term and long-term goals in all areas of your balance wheel. Effective goals are realistic and achievable - you should be able to actually visualize your goal! Write down your goals and set realistic time frames.

This is what Sean's Balance Wheel looks like:

Personal Passion - “Being pysically active is my passion and it makes me feel good. I has been participating in team sports for years until a couple of injuries to my right knee forced me to change. But change is always good, and since I have modified how I exercise I am actually in better shape then ever (with a special nod to UrbanBody's Iron Camp) ”

Career & Financial - “I have been working in the financial services field since 1995. The most satisfying part of my job is working with people on what they want to achieve; having clients get married, have a family, buy a house and start a business while I provide guidance is a wonderful thing. I also try to nudge us towards a more sustainable way of living. In my small way, I encourage clients to invest in environmentally positive induistries and companies.”

Community - “I spend time volunteering for two organizations. One is Citizens Climate Lobby - this not-for-profit group lobbies Congress, State and Local governments to enact changes in law to helpo prevent climate change. I also volunteer for the San Diego Fine Art Society. The SDFAS aligns local artists, galleries & museums with the goal of making San Diego a premier art destination."

Health & Recreation - “Youthful play is important. I enjoy games of all sorts - be it board games, sports or chess!”

Household - “Since I don't eat red meat or fowl, a majrity of my protein comes from fish or eggs. Throw in some spinach, broccoli, peppers, nuts and seeds and you have a meal!”

Family & Friends - "The companionship and support that friends and family provide is irreplaceable. The important people in my life definitely help me keep my positive outlook.”

Spiritual - "Waking to the realization that living in the present moment is the healthiest life path has had a profound effect on me. Physical exercise is one way I practice at being present. The past and future washes away when I am focused on my body during exercise.”

By satisfying and nurturing all areas of the wheel, you can achieve balance in your life. Identify your passion, set your goals and align all aspects of your day to realize your life’s work!
